Ström was a true artisan, a painter, draftsman, graphic designer, ceramicist and writer. He worked as a sign painter and studied at Reiman School in Berlin in 1935 and under Kræsten Iversen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1947–1948). He also completed self study trips to Paris and Spain. His art consists of portraits, subjects from the East Indies as well as figures from the world of fairy tales. He wrote children's books and worked with batik and ceramics, opening his own ceramics business.
