Gustav Sjöö was a swedish painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. The youngest of eleven siblings, he lacked peers and used his free time to draw and paint. His inspirations were Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors and Anders Zorn. He first painted copies of newspaper pictures before creating his own depictions of the home and its surroundings. Around the age of 18, Sjöö began training as a professional painter, and after showing some of his work to Oscar Björck, he was accepted in to the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm. He later studied and painted in Italy for 10 months taking in Rome, Naples, Palermo and Venice. In 1939 he returned to rural Sweden where he took the barren landscape and the rustic peaceful interiors of the cottages for inspiration. He was awarded a scholarship from the King's Fund in 1950 and state work scholarship in 1962 and 1965. He exhibited with Arne Aspelin, Elf Aschan, Calle Johansson and Gustav Edwall as well as many solo exhibitions. He took part in the exhibition Aspects of figurative painting in Sweden which was shown in London in 1963. He became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1963. Sjöö is represented at the Modern Museum, Borås Art Museum, the Institute Ticino in Paris and many more. From his first marriage, he had his daughter, the artist Monica Sjöö.
