Hugo Simson originally worked as a typographer and studied drawing in Gothenburg before turning to painting. He was inspired by William Scharff, Paul Cézanne and Alfred Sisley. He was awarded various scholarships during his career and even led Valand's painting school in 1955. He exhibited both collectively and individually and his art is represented at The Modern Museum in Stockholm and the Gothenburg Art Museum amongst others.
